Where to Find Outdoor Summer Fun

Summer is here, the sun is shining and life in Philly is starting to get back to normal—you know what that means? It’s time to get out and about! Summer in the city offers tremendous opportunities for outdoor adventure—from hiking and biking to brewery tours and street festivals. No matter what your interests, take some time this summer to appreciate all that the region has to offer when the weather turns warm.

One of the standouts near your Crane Chinatown apartment is Eastern State Penitentiary. The historic prison is well known for its Halloween haunts but it’s open year-round for history tours, lectures on social justice topics, art displays and more. And now, it’s also adding beer garden to its repertoire.

The Fair Chance Beer Garden opened in May, located on the same spot that formerly housed the inmate baseball diamond. The venture was made possible through a unique partnership with Triple Bottom Brewery, a “fair chance” employer, meaning that it prioritizes hiring people who were formerly incarcerated and who have experienced poverty and homelessness. The company pays all employees at least $15 an hour and invests heavily in the local community, particularly in social justice issues, making it a fitting partner for Eastern State.

On the menu will be the co-branded Purpose Pale Ale, created specifically for the beer garden, along with a half-dozen other brews and light bites. Visitors can access the beer garden with tickets to Night Tours: Summer Twilight, which features a tour of the penitentiary—including to Al Capone’s former cell and the penitentiary’s infamous death row—as well as access to its art installations. Tours are held Friday and Saturday evenings and cost $19, but members are admitted for free.

Summer in Philly offers plenty of ways to chill out, cool off and soak in the fun.
